Oscars Night: Homemade Microwave POPCORN!

Any excuse to eat popcorn is good in my book.  I like to make my own microwave popcorn using Alton Brown’s ingenious method.

All you have to do here is put 1/4 – 1/3 cup popcorn kernels in a paper lunch bag, fold the top of the bag over twice, then staple it (Alton explains in his book that it’s okay to put staples in the microwave, even though they’re metal, because they’re actually smaller than the waves.  Pretty cool, huh?) or use an all-plastic chip clip.

I have found that it is very important to turn down the power level on my microwave or else it burns right away.  Level 7 (out of 10) seems to work for me, but your microwave might be different.  You may need to experiment before you get it just right.  I then set my microwave for 5 minutes and listen carefully.  When the pops are 2 minutes apart, it’s ready!

You can eat it right out of the bag or add your favorite toppings.  I like melted Earth Balance buttery spread.  It’s vegan and non-hydrogenated.

My favorite seasonings to add are kosher salt, nutritional yeast, and lemon pepper.

  • 1 paper lunch bag: $0.02
  • 1/3 cup popcorn kernels: $0.17
  • 2 tablespoons Earth Balance: $0.26
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast: $0.30
  • a few pinches of kosher salt: $0.01
  • a few grinds of lemon pepper: $0.01

=$0.19 for the popcorn

=$0.77 total with toppings!

This is definitely cheaper than store-bought microwave popcorn, and it’s chemical-free.  Yay!

Other  seasoning combinations I like:

  • salt and freshly ground pepper
  • salt, chili powder, and garlic powder
  • all-purpose seasoning
  • salt and curry powder
  • a little bit of hot sauce mixed into the melted margarine (not too much or it gets soggy) and salt

What do you like on popcorn?  Leave me a comment!
